The Venetsanos family has a very long tradition in producing wine. It is located above the Port Athinios, overlooking the magnificent Caldera of Santorini.
It was built in 1947 by Venetsanos family and became the first industrial winery on the island. The winery was built in an unconventional manner constructed from above and moving downwards. Due to the slope of the ground it was built on four floors, each with a different stage if winemaking and where the transport of wine was done by natural flow.
In the first there was the weighbridge and the grapes bowls. Then there were the drainage machines and the electric generator and below the tanks and presses. The fourth level was the basement with the taps of the tanks. From there the wine fell with pipes in the port and in the ships that led it to ports abroad.
The winery offers you the chance to walk through and discover the history and tradition as well as the new winemaking techniques. You are able to take a detailed tour of the winery while also tasting some exceptional wines and enjoy a light lunch experience with the breathtaking views of the Caldera cliffs and the Aegean Sea.
The largest private owner of vineyards in Santorini is Estate Argyros. The estate has been established in 1903. The vineyards are planted on volcanic soils and cover 26 hectares (65 acres) of land on the island.
Argyro’s vineyards are situated at altitudes ranging from 115-500 ft (35-150m) above sea level. The vines are cultivated in the traditional basket style, which shelters the grapes from Santorini’s strong winds. Every single vineyards is considered a unique organism. Native grapes varieties like Assyrtico, Arthurian and Aidani are planted here making wines in a range of styles, from dry whites to sweet Vinsanto. The grapes for the Vinsanto are dried outdoors on the dry, sun-baked ground- a technique unique to this region.
This is a tour for all winemakers and it is also a nice introduction to the indigenous grapes of Santorini and the story of Estate Argyros. All wine tours include time spend in vineyards and the production side of the winery. You will experience the Assyrtico grapes and the Santorini wines at their finest coupled with cheese and cold cuts.
