Akrotiri museum
The tour of the museum lasts about 1 or 2 hours depending on the peak season. Akrotiri is located 15 km south of the capital Fira, built on the slopes of a hill. According to the Greek census is 2011 it has 489 permanent inhabitants. Akrotiri is referred to as the " Greek Pompeii ". In the middle Cycladic Period (20th-17th centuries BC) it was extended and gradually developed into one of the main urban centers and ports of the Aegean. The eminent Greek archeologist Spyridon Marinatos started the excavation in Akrotiri in 1967, in order to verify his old theory that the eruption of the Thera volcano was responsible for the collapse of the Minoan Civilization. Since his death in 1974, the excavations have been continued under the direction of Professor Christos Doumas and till today he continues his work with remarkable results. A visit to the museum, but more importantly to the archaeological site of Akrotiri constitutes a unique experience for history-loving visitors and families because they can combine tourism, education and a visit to the Red Beach which is located near Akrotiri village.
